Tuesday 23 th September:
stage 16 : Jaen - Sierra Nevada 162 kms
We begin the third week, after a day of rest in Jaen, with a stage having a difficult finish: Sierra Nevada, the highest point of the Vuelta which is the summit of alberto Fernandez.
this stage may reveal a great part of the final standings.

HERAS pourra t-il réduire l'écart avec NOZAL qui est à 4 minutes. Il faudrait qu'il lui reprenne au moins 2 minutes pour conserver une chance de victoire à Madrid.

100km avant l'arrivée, les 2 échappés, Tauler et lobato, sortis du groupe des 15 premiers échappés.
les labarca veulent réduire l'écart avec les 15 échappés et permettent au peloton de les reprendre
Le peloton plaisante et chantonne, avec les 2 échappés devant qui ne l'inquiète pas.
Le peloton a mis en route pour réduire l' écart avec les 2 échappés qui a atteint 8 minutes.
au sprint intermédiaire de Grenade, Zabel passe deavant Petacchi et lui grapille 1 pt qui conforte son maillot à pois


Au pied de la sierra Glez de galdeano se débarasse de son casque.

Comme on s'y attendait l'US postale passe de suite à l'attaque dés les premiers reliefs de la Sierra Nevada.
Beltran commence à faiblir, sous le rythme de Floyd Landis qui emmène Heras.
Le peloton reste groupé et ralentit l'allure lorsque Beltran l'emmène
Sevilla place la kelme à l'avant pour controler le train et file devant.
SEvilla attaque, Heras prend sa roue,
Rasmussen saute dans la roue de Heras et Sevilla, pourtant ce groupe tergiverse ne s'entend pas. On est encore loin de l'arrivée.
L'attaque trop franche de Sevilla ayant mis Valverde resté dans le peloton en difficulté, Sevilla lève le pied et le peloton se regroupe.

Ils sont 4 à l'avant qui ont repris et distancé unai Osa,
Sevilla, Mercado, Cardenas et Atienza.
Tauler d'abord, puis Lobato sont repris par ce groupe.

à 7 devant, après le retour des 3

A 1km du sommet, Mercado est toujours seul en tête poursuivi par Cardenas, sorti du groupe de poursuivants.

Mercado le héros du jour passe deuxième, le panache lui revenant plus qu'à Cardeans qui est resté dans les roues pendant presque toute l'ascension
Sevilla et Valverde 3ème et 4ème devant Piepoli et Delolmo
Unai Osa arrive 7ème devant Heras 8ème et Rasmussen 9ème.

Nozal arrive avec 54" de retard sur Heras
Glez de galdeano a été distancé il termine dans un groupe derrière celui de Nozal.

Sevilla le principal attaquant du jour, 3 ème de l'étape
Valverde gagne une place au général il passe Beltran et devient 4 ème à près de 2 minutes de Heras 3ème.

Cardenas was in group, but fell back to peloton.

A. Osa passes Alto de la Fuensant in lead at 1,150 meters.

AT 100km from finish, group holds 1 minute lead.
Rubiera falls back from lead group.

Lobato & Tauler break away from group.

At 80kkm from finish, the 2 have 1'20" on peloton, & 50km to go before Sierra Nevada ascent.

Just before the food bags are taken, Tauler punctures; Lobato slows down, & Tauler quickly catches up.

After the peloton has taken food, the 2 have lead of 3'20",with around 70km remaining.

Distance incrieases to 4'45".

The peloton is relaxed and pleasant, joking and singing.

At 55km from end, the 2 have a 7'29" advance.

Their lead reaches 8 minutes.

The peloton puts on some speed, becomes more serious.

There are just 15km before the Sierra Nevadas.

The gap diminishes, now at 7'45".

The 2 hit Grenada, and first intermediary sprint.

Labarca & Rabobank take the head of the peloton, for the sake of Cardenas & Rasmussen.

The last point for the intermediary sprint is hotly disputed by Zabel & Petacchi. Zabel just takes it.Zabel now has 5 point lead...but a stage victory is worth 25 points!

Leaving Grenada, the gap is 6'44".

On plateau approaching climb, the gap is now 6'.

U.S. Postal now leading peloton.

Floyd Landis with Beltran in his wheel, followed by Rasmussen, Cardenas, Valverde & Sevilla.

Nozal not at front, Galdeano further back in 2nd peloton, & Frigo struggling well back.

Beltran takes front, but not in great form and falls back--will likely be unavailable to help Heras.

Laiseka is distanced.

Aitor Osa launches attack.

Attacks by Gutierez & Jeker, who are retaken.

Lobato & Tauler have a 3'54" advance.

Piepoli & Montgomery attack, are retaken.

Sevilla attacks, followed by Jeker & Piepoli, then fall back.

Sevilla attacks anew, with Heras in wheel, & Galdeano just behind.
Rasmussen sees danger & responds, followed by Valverde.
This group slows its tentative escape and is rejoined by Nozal & peloton.

Sevilla, Cardenas & Atienza attack once again, & catch Gutierez.

Sevilla attacks today without letup!

With 17km to go, Lobato alone in lead with 1'22" lead.

Sevilla, Cardenas, Atienza & Mercado overtake U. Osa & distance him.

Tauler is taken next, and can only keep pace with the pursuers briefly, who are now after Lobato.

Of the group of 4, Mercado attacks.

Piepoli leaves peloton in pursuit of Valverde, who has now broken away.

In the back of the peloton, Beltran comes back strongly with Blanco.

Valverde, Piepoli & del Olmo catch up with pursuit group.
Group has 43" advance on peloton.

Lobato has a 40" lead on the pursuit group.

Heras still has not made a move, staying in peloton controlled by Once.

At 10km from finish Lobato has 15" lead on group & 55" on peloton.

Lobato retaken, gap stabilized between group & peloton, which is now headed by Beltran.

As Lobato falls back, Cardenas shuns relay with Kelme teamates Sevilla & Valverde.

At 9km from finish gap is 1 minute, Valverde in front.

Lead fluctuating; now Atienza in front.

Beltran accelerates in front of peloton, worried about his 4th place position which is threatened by Valverde.Soon he pays a price for his efforts.

In front, Mercado accelerates all alone.

With 6km remaining, Heras leaves pelooton, followed by Rasmussen & U. Osa. In a few hundred meters there's already a 22" gap on Nozal & peloton.

Galdeano is in second small peloton.

Hereas gaining time on Sevilla & group; Mercado stays in lead.

Mercado approaches final sprint, with Cardenas hard on his heels.

Mercado taken with 500 meters remaining; Cardenas passes finish line 150 meters in front to win, Sevilla takes 3rd.

Heras finishes 54" up on Nozal; Valverde finishes strong to move up to 4th overall in front of Beltran.

Sevilla, after a poor start on the tour, moves up to 13th overall.
